How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing Google Rankings (2026 Guide)
A redesign can wipe out years of Google traffic overnight if old pages disappear. The step-by-step process we follow to keep rankings and enquiries while the site gets a new look.
You keep your Google rankings during a redesign by keeping every page that already gets traffic at the same address — or permanently redirecting (301) it to its closest new page — and by carrying over its title, main content and internal links. Most ranking drops after a redesign come from deleted pages and changed addresses with no redirects.
Before the redesign
- Export every page address from your current site and from Google Search Console
- Note which pages get clicks and which searches they appear for
- Save the current page titles, descriptions and headings for those pages
- List the pages that bring enquiries — these are the ones you cannot afford to lose
During the redesign
- Keep the same address for important pages wherever you can
- Map every old address that changes to a new one in a redirect list
- Keep the main text of ranking pages; improve it rather than replacing it with a slogan
- Build on a staging address that Google is blocked from, so the half-built site isn't indexed
Launch day
- Switch on the 301 redirects and test each one
- Remove the staging block so Google can crawl the new site
- Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console
- Test every form, phone and WhatsApp button with a real enquiry
The first 30 days after launch
- Check Search Console weekly for '404 not found' errors and redirect them
- Compare clicks on your top pages against the weeks before launch
- A small dip for one or two weeks is normal while Google re-reads the site; a lasting drop usually points to a missing redirect or removed content
Redesign cost
| Site type | Typical redesign price |
|---|---|
| Business website | ₹50,000 – ₹1,20,000 |
| Ecommerce website | ₹1,50,000 – ₹4,00,000 |
At Preevee, the redirect map and the 30-day check are part of every redesign, not an add-on.
