Instagram gets you seen. It does not get you booked.
Instagram is unmatched at the top of the funnel — a couple planning a wedding will look at a hundred grids. But it is a terrible place to make a decision. There is no way to see a full wedding start to finish, no indication of price, no clarity on what a package includes, no availability, and every enquiry lands in a DM inbox alongside vendor spam.
The pattern that converts is Instagram for discovery, website for decision. A couple sees three images they like, taps through to a full story of that wedding with sixty photographs in narrative order, reads what the day involved, sees a starting rate that fits their budget, and sends an enquiry with their date already in it. That is a booked call. The same couple in a DM asks 'price?' and joins a queue of forty identical messages.
There is also the durability argument. An account can be lost, restricted or throttled at any moment, and reach on a five-year-old account is a fraction of what it once was. The work you have published on your own domain keeps accumulating search value the entire time.
Venue pages are the most under-used tactic in wedding photography
Couples search for venues long before they search for photographers, and a significant number then search the two together: 'wedding photographer at <venue>', or simply the venue name plus 'photos'. Almost no photographer has a page for this, which makes it one of the cheapest ranking opportunities in the category.
If you have shot at a property more than once, build it a page. Name the venue, describe the light through the day, the best spots for couple portraits, how the mandap or altar is typically positioned, what the constraints are, and how long coverage realistically takes there. Include the images. A venue coordinator looking for a photographer to recommend will find that page, and so will every couple who has just booked the property.
The same logic extends to city pages. 'Wedding photographer in Jaipur' is searched by people who do not live in Jaipur and are planning a destination wedding — a page describing the city's venues, permissions, light and your travel terms will out-rank a home page that merely mentions the city in a footer.
Fast galleries are not optional in this category
Photography sites are the slowest category on the web, for an obvious reason: the product is large images and the owner wants them shown at full quality. A page loading forty untouched exports can weigh sixty megabytes. On a phone that is a blank screen for ten seconds, and the visitor is gone before they see a single frame.
Quality does not have to be sacrificed for this. Modern formats, correctly sized variants for each screen, lazy loading below the fold and a CDN together bring a forty-image page under two seconds with no visible difference in quality on the devices people actually use. We build every gallery this way and test on a throttled connection before launch, not on office wi-fi.
It matters for search as well as for patience. Page speed is a ranking input, and image search is a genuine traffic source for photographers — but only for images that load, carry descriptive filenames rather than DSC_4471, and sit on a page with real text around them explaining what the photograph is of and where it was taken.
What a photographer website costs

Instagram, a wedding marketplace, or your own website
Photographers usually run on Instagram plus a marketplace listing. Both bring volume; neither is yours, and both have a specific ceiling.
| Wedding marketplace | Your own website | ||
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, plus constant posting | ₹30,000 – ₹1,50,000 a year | One-time build, then hosting |
| Found via Google | Rarely | Under the marketplace brand | Under your own name |
| Leads shared | No | Yes — with every listed studio | No |
| Image search traffic | No | No | Yes, with proper alt text and filenames |
| Full portfolio depth | Grid only, no context | Limited by their template | Complete stories with context |
| Price positioning | Invisible until DM | Compared side by side on price | Framed by your own work |
| Best used as | Discovery and proof of activity | Volume during a slow season | Where serious enquiries convert |
