Frequently asked questions
What are UTM parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are tags appended to a URL — utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, utm_content — that tell Google Analytics where traffic came from. Required if you want accurate attribution in GA4.
What's the difference between source, medium and campaign?
utm_source = where the click came from (e.g. 'google', 'newsletter'). utm_medium = the marketing channel (e.g. 'cpc', 'email', 'social'). utm_campaign = the specific campaign name (e.g. 'diwali_sale_2025').
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. 'Facebook' and 'facebook' are treated as two different sources in GA4. Best practice: always use lowercase to keep your reports clean.
Do UTM parameters affect SEO?
No, but use them only on outbound links you control (ads, emails, social). Never apply UTM tags to internal links — it resets attribution and inflates session counts in GA4.
