Frequently asked questions
How is FD interest calculated?
Banks compound FD interest quarterly. Maturity = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t), where P = principal, r = annual rate, n = 4 (quarterly), t = years. This calculator uses standard quarterly compounding for cumulative FDs.
What is the typical FD interest rate in India?
As of 2025–26, Indian banks offer 6.5–7.5% for general public on 1–5 year FDs, and 7–8% for senior citizens. Small finance banks offer up to 8.5%.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes. FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. TDS @ 10% is deducted by the bank if interest exceeds ₹40,000/year (₹50,000 for seniors).
Cumulative vs non-cumulative FD?
Cumulative FD reinvests interest and pays at maturity (compound growth). Non-cumulative pays interest monthly/quarterly to your account. This calculator computes cumulative FD.
